Trail mix is a great option for packing in several essential nutrients. Until recently, I always bought pre-made trail mix. After mixing up a batch from scratch, I realize I’ve been missing out. All trail mix lovers should do themselves a favor and go the homemade route. You can use your favorite ingredients, making it better than any store-bought mix. Of course, that’s not the only reason it is better. When you make your mix from scratch, you are put in control of the ingredients!
Nuts and seeds are the main ingredients in my trail mix, and where most of the nutrition can be found. Of course, all nuts and seeds should be removed from their shells before adding (I buy them with shells removed).
A good place to start for trail mix ingredients is the nut aisle or even the bulk section of your local grocery or health food store.
If your trail mix will be exposed to warm temperatures, leave out the dark chocolate or you’ll end up with trail soup. Unless that’s your thing, of course.
Don’t be afraid to get creative by adding various healthy add-ins. I added roasted green peas and was quite happy with the outcome. I got them from the bulk foods section of my local vegetable market. They could also be roasted at home.
Keep it Healthy
I like salty trail mix, but to cut down on sodium I add one salted nut; the rest of the ingredients are unsalted. After mixing everything, the salt spreads among the ingredients and is sufficient for me.
If you add dehydrated fruit to the mix, do so sparingly. Even the varieties that don’t have added sugar are high in sugar. Dehydrated fruit is high in sugar because the dehydration process removes water, making the fruit shrink down. Therefore, a handful of dehydrated fruit started out as a lot more than a handful when it was fresh.
Making trail mix is fun so choose your favorite ingredients and have fun mixing them together. It is something kids can help with as well. Feel free to share your favorite add-ins in the comments section.
